A Fork Is the One Thing Nobody Can Take

I built at the top of a platform I did not own.

Vehicle Simulator. Around 500 million visits. A Hot Wheels partnership with Mattel. I spoke at their developer conference in San Francisco and again in Amsterdam.

Then the platform removed the work and the account in single decision.

I am not writing this to relitigate that. I am writing because of what it taught me, and because most people here already know the lesson in their bones.

You were never partner. You were tenant.

Everything you built sat on ground someone else owned, and the day their interests stopped matching yours, the ground moved.

That is not a story about one company. It is a structural fact about closed platforms, and it will happen again to somebody reading this.

So I spent the last few years building the answer.

It is called Eustress, and the core idea is small enough to say in one line: your world is file you own.

Not an account. Not a profile on someone's server. A file, on your machine, that you can copy, verify, and carry anywhere.

The engine that runs it is source-available and forkable. You can read every line. You can take the whole thing and walk. Nobody can reach across and unmake your copy.

That is the whole moral architecture, and it is the only one trust.

But I want to be clear about something, because this is where most people underestimate what is being built.

This is not game engine.

It is a simulation platform. That distinction is the entire point, and here is what it actually does today.

On the same clock tick that drops a box under gravity, it runs a full nuclear reactor. The neutron physics. The heat. The feedback loops. The automatic shutdown that trips the instant a real limit is crossed. Not a diagram of a reactor; a reactor, running, streaming live numbers you can read and steer.

It can take a simulated world, fork it, change exactly one rule, and run both versions forward from the identical starting point. Same seed, same result, every time. You watch the two futures separate and you know the rule was the only difference.

Sit with that for a second, because it is bigger than software.

For all of human history, you could argue about how a system would behave, but you could never run it twice.

You could not take a policy, a design, an economy, an incentive structure, and test it against a controlled copy of itself. You got one run. You got hindsight. You got everyone shouting about what would have happened.

Now you can fork it and find out.

That is the capability I think matters most, and almost nobody is talking about it yet.

There is more, and all of it is running.

An AI can reach into a world that is actually live: change something, move its own camera to look at the result, and confirm what happened, in one motion. You describe what you want in plain words, and a moment later it is behavior that ticks. Building stops being a translation problem and becomes a conversation.

Every meaningful change anyone makes to a world gets written into a record nobody sits above and nobody can quietly edit afterward. Not moderator watching. ledger that outlives the argument.

And a rule you write into a world's foundation is not a suggestion. Break it, and the code does not run at all. It never compiles. The law lives underneath the software instead of on top of it.

Then there is the part I am proudest of, because it is the part that pays people.

Open the engine, do real work, and the work gets measured, independently confirmed, and paid out in real money. Not points. Not exposure. Not a promise about revenue share someday.

It has been live and paying since the first of July.

The oldest extraction in the creator economy is a platform taking the biggest cut of value it did not create. I inverted it. The value was always the maker's, and the system returns it by design rather than by permission.

Now the honest part, because I would rather you trust the next update than the last excuse.

Not everything is finished.

The version that runs headless on a server, so a thousand forked worlds can run overnight while you sleep, is not built yet. The contributor system rewards three kinds of work today, not the nine the roadmap describes. A few pieces are scaffolding waiting for hands.

I could hide those. I am telling you instead, because a claim you can check is worth more than a claim that sounds good.

The finished parts are real and running. The unfinished parts are where somebody else's name goes.

Here is why I am posting this here specifically.

The people on this platform understand ownership in a way most of the internet does not. You came here because you watched what happens when the ground moves under someone, and you decided you wanted a floor you could stand on.

That is exactly the instinct that built this engine.

I am not asking you to buy anything. I am telling you that the tool exists, that most of it works today, that you can read every line of it, and that a fork is the one thing nobody can take back.

If you build, come look at it. If you are done renting the ground you stand on, this is what the alternative looks like.

And if you have ever wanted to test an idea instead of just arguing about it, that door is open now for the first time.

What would you build, if nobody could delete it?
